Mercia Charters: Dutch Tour - September 27th - 28th "The Fair Haven"

Over the weekend 27th and 28th September UK based Mercia Charters are running a special train from Utrecht to Gronignen and return upon which places are still available.

The train will feature locomotives from DB Schenker from ex-NS Types 1600 and 6400, freight lines, a visit to the STAR museum line at Veendam, along with a number of photostops each day. Different locomotives have been requested for each days train but this cannot be guaranteed due the normal service requirements of DB Schenker. On the museum line we are expecting the use of an ex-NS 2200 diesel locomotive.

The requested route On Saturday 27th: Utrecht Centraal (PU, 08.30) – Breukelen – Amsterdam Bijlmer – Diement Zuid – Weesp (PU) – Almere Centrum – Lelystad Centrum – Zwolle (PU) – Meppel – Assen – Onnen – Groningen – Sauwerd – Delfzijl – into Docks to extremity of PPG sidings (rev) – Delfzijl – Sauwerd (rev) – Uithuizen – Roodeschool (rev) – Uithuizenmeerden (rev) – Eemshaven extremity (rev) – Uithuizen – Sauwerd – Groningen (SD, 1800)

The requested route for Sunday 28th: Groningen (PU, 0830) - Zuidbroek – Veendam – Stadskanaal – Musselkanaal (rev) – Stadskanaal – Veendam – Zuidboek – Haren – Onnen Yard – Meppel – Zwolle (SD) – Amersfoort (SD) – Utercht Centraal (SD, 1800)

PU = pick up passengers, SD = set down passengers

You will need to book your own hotels as these are NOT included in the ticket price.

Times given above are for guidance only!

Full details of the trains are on our website: www.merciacharters.co.uk

Fares are as follows:

Individual Saturday or Sunday - € 105 per person
Combined fare for both days - € 195 per person

If you can collate a booking for 8 or more persons the price can reduce the above fares by around 10%, thereby as follows:

Saturday/Sunday = € 95 per person
Combined = € 175

If you can collate a list of names passengers may then pay in cash on the day to make things easier, but they must "book in advance".

Apologies for posting in English ...

Someone has reported on the 'op de rails' facebook group that there is engineering work between Meppel and Zwolle on Sunday until 1915. You can see this here on the NS web site;

http://www.ns.nl/werktrajecten/detail.f ... p_zl_28sep

While it is possible to get back to Belgium from 1927 at Utrecht (as long as the train is not delayed), it certainly is not possible to get back to Belgium from Utrecht at about 2100.

Hopefully the tour organisers will arranges buses/coaches for people who cannot spend Sunday night in the Netherlands.

JP (now living in Brussels).

Now, the problems were there, yes. They were working between Zwolle and Meppel. Originally it was plannet to work from 0:00 to 16:00, but they've found more work, and the working was to 19:15 set, at the friday before ....

For our travellers, it was pretty that they've could leave at Meppel, and go with the NS Busses to Zwolle, for travellers who have a plane or boat booked. But, when we were at Meppel, 17 minutes later (arrival 17:35, time of the message 17:52) from ProRail was that the working was ready, and this special train was the first train that could drive to Zwolle and Utrecht. Because the original timetable was planned after departure of the regional train Zwolle - Meppel, but at Zwolle it was possible to stay before this local train, and the arrival was than 19:13 and not 19:27 ...

The travellers with us, the SSN, I've enjoyed them. It was very pretty. The most "Railhobbyists" we've meet from Holland, doesn't listen always to the rules, but this (mostly) Brittish club was really nice.
