Fujitsu Siemens Computers nutzt DB-China-Zug
In Xiangtang, rund 700 km nördlich von Hongkong, ist heute ein Container-Zug Richtung Deutschland abgefahren. Der mit 50 Containern beladene Fujitsu Siemens Computers Company-Train transportiert in China produzierte IT-Produkte wie Monitore und Chassis nach Hamburg.

In der Hansestadt wird der von DB Schenker in Zusammenarbeit mit der Russischen Eisenbahn RZD und den chinesischen Eisenbahnen betreute Zug nach 17 Tagen und über 10.000 km Strecke am 6. Oktober erwartet. Gegenüber der Seefracht sei der Bahntransport flexibler und zirka ein Drittel schneller und gegenüber der Luftfracht um rund drei Viertel kostengünstiger, so der Computerhersteller. Fujitsu Siemens Computers hat als erstes Unternehmen eine kompletten Zug auf diesem Transportweg eingesetzt.

In einigen Monaten plant DB Schenker die Betriebsaufnahme des Trans Eurasia Express, einer wöchentlichen Verbindung China-Deutschland mit Abfahrten in beiden Ländern.

Nach der Ankunft in Hamburg werden die 50 Container in zwei Richtungen weitergeleitet: Die Monitore gelangen mit dem Zug weiter ins europäische Verteilzentrum von FSC nach Worms, die Chassis fahren direkt bis zur Fabrik nach Augsburg, in der PCs und Server produziert werden. Rund 60 Prozent der Produktion von Fujitsu Siemens Computers findet in Deutschland statt.

Deutsche Bahn start vaste spoorverbinding met China
De Duitse spoorwegmaatschappij Deutsche Bahn legt vanaf januari 2009 een vaste treinverbinding voor goederentransport in tussen Duitsland en China. De trein zal het traject een maal per week afleggen. Dat raakte vandaag bekend.

Het containertransport vertrekt uit Peking of Shanghai en rijdt naar Hamburg, Duisburg of Neurenberg. Het traject wordt ook in tegenovergestelde richting afgelegd. Ten laatste eind volgend jaar moeten er ook treinen naar Moskou en Sint-Petersburg in Rusland rijden.

Goederenstroom
"De goederenstroom vanuit China naar Duitsland is duidelijk groter dan omgekeerd", aldus topman Hartmut Albers van Deutsche Bahn. Toch zou er ook vraag zijn voor het traject Duitsland-Chinia, vooral vanuit de machinebouw en chemie.

Grote belangstelling bedrijven
In totaal hebben meer dan honderd ondernemingen gezegd geïnteresseerd te zijn in de zogenaamde Trans Eurasia Expres. De eerste klant zal Fujitsu Siemens Computers zijn. De trein zal zeventien dagen nodig hebben om vijftig containers boordevol schermen en computers van Xiantang naar Hamburg te brengen, een traject van zowat 10.000 kilometer.

Snel en goedkoop
Voor Fujitsu zal het transport drie keer zo snel verlopen als over water en vier keer minder kosten dan transport via het vliegtuig. (belga/eb)

13 gewonden bij nieuw treinongeluk in Los Angeles
In Los Angeles zijn vanmorgen dertien treinpassagiers gewond geraakt toen hun trein botste tegen een lege passagiersbus. Een week geleden botste even buiten de stad een passagierstrein op een goederentrein. Daarbij vielen 25 doden en ruim 130 gewonden.

Oorzaak
Het voorste rijtuig van de elektrische stoptrein, een Metro Blue Line, ontspoorde door de botsing. Volgens de brandweer verkeerde geen van de gewonden in levensgevaar. Een woordvoerder van de Metropolitan Transportation Authority, die zowel de bus als de trein beheert, zei dat een onderzoek is ingesteld naar de oorzaak van de botsing en welke van de voertuigen voorrang had.
Vorige botsing
Ook het onderzoek naar het treinongeluk van vorige week loopt nog. Onderzocht wordt of de machinist van de passagierstrein zat te sms-en en daardoor de naderende goederentrein niet zag. Inmiddels is duidelijk dat hij niet heeft geremd voordat hij de andere trein frontaal raakte. (novum/sam)

Railpool places €192m order for 58 Traxx locos

EUROPE: The Railpool joint venture of HSH Nordbank and KfW-IPEX Bank has placed its first order for locomotives.

On September 22 Bombardier announced that it had signed two contracts to supply the leasing firm with a total of 58 Traxx locomotives worth €192m. Deliveries will begin in August 2009, and the agreement includes an option for a further 80 locomotives.

Railpool plans to deploy the locomotives in seven European countries. Christoph Katzensteiner, Managing Director of Railpool, said 'Bombardier is a partner with which we can get fast access to the European leasing market.'

When Railpool was founded in July, Michiel Munting of HSH Nordbank said a speculative order of locomotives could help the new firm to gain a foothold with franchised passenger operators and open-access freight companies. Railpool is aiming to create a 'one stop shop', with wet-leased locos maintained at a network of approved depots to minimise downtime. A portfolio of assets worth up to €500m is foreseen within three to five years.

Bombardier has now sold more than 1 300 locos from the Traxx family. The locomotives ordered from Bombardier will be assembled at Kassel, using bodies produced at Wroclaw, bogies from Siegen and Mitrac propulsion and control equipment from Hennigsdorf and Mannheim.

Kaohsiung Orange Line revenue service starts

TAIWAN: Revenue services on Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp's 14·4 km Orange Line began on September 22. Eight days of free rides had begun on September 14.

During October the MRT Bureau will submit proposals to the Ministry of Transport & Communications for extensions to the Red and Orange lines. A further 23·4 km of line is proposed, at a total cost of NT$48bn.

SWITZERLAND: Transport Minister Moritz Leuenberger formally inaugurated Lausanne's automatic metro line M2 on September 18 by cutting a ribbon at Riponne-M Béjart station.

More than 60 000 people rode on the rubber-tyred metro trains on September 18 and 19. The public are able to use the line until September 22, when it closes for final adjustments before the start of commercial operations on October 27.

Nürnberg Talent 2 commuter train on display

INNOTRANS: In the first of many product launches lined up for InnoTrans 2008, Bombardier Transportation unveiled a Talent 2 EMU for Nürnberg commuter services shortly after the opening of the show on September 23.

Deutsche Bahn and Bombardier signed a €1·2bn framework agreement covering up to 321 of the trains in February 2007. DB Regio is deploying the first 61 units on the Moselbahn between Koblenz and Trier, with Leipzig - Cottbus the next to receive the trains, and the commuter network in Nürnberg to follow from December 2010.

Built at Hennigsdorf, the four-car train for Nürnberg has electronic passenger information, six wide doors on each side and an accessible toilet.

Talent 2 is a modular design concept, with train lengths from two to six cars and a top speed of 160 km/h. Bombardier says the modularity will allow vehicles to be reconfigured during their operational life, with easy changes to the interior layout and the number of doors. It should be possible to calculate conversion costs accurately, giving a high resale value.

The design is also suitable for use outside Germany, including by operators looking to expand beyond their local market. 'The Talent 2 vehicle is a product which is really geared to the future,' said André Navarri, President of Bombardier Transportation.

'For customers like DB Regio, its flexibility is a decisive argument in the face of growing international competition. The train is not just flexible, it's also very comfortable, energy-efficient and cost-effective.'

INNOTRANS: Following the high-profile debut of its Maxima 40CC freight locomotive at InnoTrans 2006, Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik of Kiel will be showing the smaller members of its growing diesel-hydraulic family.

The Voith locomotive display will feature a 2750 kW Maxima 30CC, which shares many components with the more powerful 40CC, but is powered by a 12-cylinder variant of the ABC 16V DZC engine (RG 11.07 p724). Much attention will focus on the unveiling of the Gravita 10BB, representing the range of small-to-medium power locomotives for the shunting and short-haul freight market.

The Gravita range offers a choice of power ratings from 400 to 2200 kW, with all locomotives sharing a similar bodyshell with centre cab. Voith uses a modular cab design across all its locomotives to minimise driver training requirements. The Gravita will also use Voith’s latest SilentVent fan, which provides a 7 dB reduction in noise emission compared to conventional cooling equipment.

The four-axle 10BB is powered by an eight-cylinder MTU 4000 engine; a 15BB prototype has also been built, using a 12-cylinder MTU power pack. Voith intends to build 18 Gravitas in 2009, with the first deliveries of series production locomotives scheduled for the middle of next year.

The German group will also be showcasing the one4 auto-coupler, developed by Voith Turbo Scharfenberg, which is being supplied to Hyundai Rotem for the KTX-II fleet (RG 8.08 p518), and the TracSys modular control system to monitor anti-wheelslip equipment, brakes, transmission and vehicle lighting simultaneously.

INNOTRANS: Deutsche Bahn has placed a contract with Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik for 130 Gravita 10 BB diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotives worth around €250m.

To be designated Class 260, the locomotives will replace Class 291 and 295 locos when they enter service with DB Schenker Rail in 2010-12. The 1 000 kW machines will weigh 80 tonnes and have a top speed of 100 km/h, but DB said the technical options are still to be agreed.

'The purchase of these diesel-hydraulic locomotives is the next systematic step in Deutsche Bahn's investment programme in the modernisation of its fleet,' said Dr Klaus Kremper, Chairman of Railion Deutschland. 'Powerful high-tech vehicles are more energy-efficient and give us important competitive advantages.'

SNCB dual-system loco to be unveiled

INNOTRANS: The Class 18 dual-system electric loco for Belgium will be unveiled by Siemens at InnoTrans. SNCB has ordered 60 locos, with options for a further 60, and the first is due to be delivered at the beginning of 2009.

The latest development of the Euro­sprinter family, the Class 18 is designated ES60U3. It follows the 25-strong build of Class 4700 locos being delivered to CP in Portugal. To meet the latest TSI requirements on crashworthiness, noise and fire protection, it features a revised bodyshell design, but retains the standard IGBT inverter traction controls.

The bogie is directly derived from the HAB design used on the ES64 ‘Taurus’, with minor modifications to meet customer requirements. The traction drive, includes an extra braking shaft with two brake discs. The unit is fully suspended from the bogie frame, and powers the axle via flexible couplings and a quill drive. The axles are guided by horizontal links; primary suspension is by coil springs and a vertical shock absorber, and a king pin transmits the traction forces. Two pairs of flexicoil springs provide the secondary suspension, complemented by two horizontal shock absorbers at the frame corners and anti-hunting dampers.

Built to the UIC 1 loading gauge, the Class 18 has two pantographs: one for 3 kV DC and the other for 25 kV 50 Hz. Continuous rating is 5 MW under both voltages, with a maximum tractive effort of 300 kN. The design will be certified for use on both voltages in Belgium and Luxembourg, and for 25 kV operation in France. It will also be cleared to run across the borders into the Netherlands and Germany, developing a maximum of 2·5 MW under 1·5 kV DC at Roosendaal and Maastricht, and running to Aachen at 3 kV. With an overall length of 19 580 mm, and a tare weight of 88 tonnes, the Class 18 has 1 250 mm diameter wheels. Dynamic braking under 3 kV is rated at 2·4 MW, with a maximum braking effort of 150 kN.

Siemens will also be displaying a driving car and two intermediate vehicles for the Velaro RUS high speed train, destined to operate at up to 250 km/h on the routes from Moscow to St Petersburg and Nizhni Novgorod. Siemens has a contract to build eight 10-car trainsets for RZD and maintain them for their entire service life. The broad-gauge vehicles are 3 325 mm wide, with the end car 25 535 mm long and the centre cars slightly shorter at 24 175 mm, and each trainset will have seats for 604 passengers. Taking power at 3 kV DC, the unit will have 16 powered axles, giving a total rating of 8 MW.

Also on show will be the first of the 17 Desiro Main Line EMUs for Mittelrheinbahn services on the Köln – Koblenz – Mainz route.

'Peregrine falcon' to be fastest trains in Russia

INNOTRANS: The Velaro RUS high speed fleet for Russia is to be known as 'Sapsan' (peregrine falcon), RZD President Vladimir Yakunin and Chief Executive of Siemens Industry Heinrich Hiesinger announced at the unveiling of three cars from the first train.

The Siemens factory at Krefeld is producing eight 10-car Velaro RUS trains for delivery to RZD by 2010. The first will enter service from late 2009 on the Moscow - St Petersburg route, cutting an hour from current timings. This will be followed in 2010 by deployment on the Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod line, for which four of the trainsets will be equipped for dual-voltage operation on both 3 kV DC and 25 kV lines.

Taking advantage of the larger profile of the 1520 mm gauge network, the ten-car trainsets will be 330 mm wider than the ICE 3 operated by Deutsche Bahn. The design has also been winterised for temperatures as low as -50°C, and provision has been made to lengthen the trains to 12 cars in the future.

The trainsets will have installed traction power of 8 MW, with half of the axles driven. The top speed will be 250 km/h, but with the possibility of upgrading for 300 km/h.

World-leading trade fair keeps expanding

INNOTRANS: Companies from 41 countries will be represented at this year’s exhibition.
Underlining its status as the railway supply industry's premier trade exhibition, the biennial InnoTrans event is taking place at the Berlin trade fair on September 23 - 26.

The event has grown steadily, both in terms of area and exhibitor numbers over the 12 years since it moved to Messe Berlin. Some 1 900 exhibitors from 41 countries are registered for this year´s event, spread across an area totalling 150 000 m². InnoTrans 2008 will break new ground by including the halls at the northern edge of the fairground to occupy all the available exhibition space. The expansion will give visitors the opportunity to undertake a complete circuit of the halls, and has allowed Messe Berlin to open up the second main entrance at the northern end of the site to offer additional access to local transport.

Demand for external exhibition space continues to increase markedly, and for 2008, a further 1·5 km of track has been added to the 2 km provided in previous years. This will allow a wide range of rolling stock, infrastructure maintenance equipment and signalling technology to be displayed.

InnoTrans begins on September 23 with an opening conference focusing on the industry´s response to climate change, whilst the InnoTrans Convention will provide a series of themed presentations and discussion groups over the course of the next three days.

The growth in exhibition space has permitted the organisers not only to give particular sub-sectors of the industry a higher profile, but also to group exhibitors thematically within each hall. In the largest sector of the show, Railway Technology, the traction system providers will be located close to each other, as will suppliers of electrical sub-systems and vehicle components.

The Railway Technology halls will be arranged around the Summer Garden at the heart of the grounds, permitting a larger area to be devoted to Public Transport and Interiors.

The Public Transport halls will reflect the increasingly global demand for urban mobility, with half of the 260 exhibitors coming from outside Germany. Covering an overall display area of 14000 m², this sector includes passenger information systems, fare collection technology, traffic management systems and a range of consulting and engineering services. Meanwhile, the Interiors display will be 50% bigger than two years ago, covering a total of 9000 m².

The second-largest specialist sector is Railway Infrastructure, where extra floor space has been allocated to accommodate an increase in exhibitors from 250 two years ago to more than 300 this month. The dedicated Tunnel Construction zone launched in 2006 will feature once again, and Stuva is organising an International Tunnel Forum for specialist players in this field. The Tunnel Const­ruc­tion stands will be located between the Rail­way Tech­nology and Infrastructure halls, reflecting the shared expertise that exists across these sectors of the industry.

Hamburg: Niedernfelder Bahnbrücken werden saniert

UK: Network Rail announced on September 23 that it had awarded Balfour Beatty Rail Projects a £60m contract for work on the £300m Airdrie - Bathgate project to reinstate an additional route between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The contract covers doubling the 2 km line between Airdrie and Drumgelloch, reinstating double track on the 24 km alignment between Airdrie and Bathgate, and electrifying the entire route at 25 kV. Ground investigation work has commenced, and main works are due to begin early next year for commissioning in late 2010.

Under a separate phase of work, the 16 km line between Bathgate and Newbridge Junction will be doubled during a nine-day blockade starting on October 11.

Schweiz: Baubewilligung für Bahnverbindung Mendrisio – Varese – Malpensa
Das Bundesamt für Verkehr (BAV) hat am 19. September 2008 den SBB die Baubewilligung für den Bau der neuen S-Bahn-Strecke Mendrisio – Stabio – Landesgrenze erteilt. Die neue internationale Eisenbahnverbindung Mendrisio – Stabio – Varese (mit Anschluss Richtung Flughafen Malpensa) ist 17,7 km lang, davon befinden sich 6,5 km auf Schweizer Hoheitsgebiet.
